چکیده

Recently it has been demonstrated that body fat is more than just the storage of excess Calories. Body fat stored within the adipocyte cell has been shown to be metabolically active and a component of the neuroendocrine immune system. As such adipose tissue produces messenger substances such as the inflammatory cytokines IL-1 and TNF- that may contribute to the origin of heart disease, insulin resistance/Type 2 diabetes and other chronic illness associated with obesity (1). The production of cytokines may also contribute to the loss of muscle protein through an accelerated catabolic process.

Agreement of single- and multi-frequency bioimpedance measurements in hemodialysis patients: an ancillary study of the Frequent Hemodialysis Network Daily Trial.

BACKGROUND Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is well established to assess body composition. Agreements between single- and multi-frequency bioimpedance (SF-BIA, MF-BIS) measurements in subjects undergoing 6 or 3 times/week hemodialysis (HD) were analyzed. METHODS Total body water (TBW) and intra- and extracellular fluid (ICF, ECF) of subjects enrolled in the Frequent Hemodialysis Network (FHN) Dai...

Assessment of Postresuscitation Volume Status by Bioimpedance Analysis in Patients with Sepsis in the Intensive Care Unit: A Pilot Observational Study

Background. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a novel method of assessing a patient's volume status. Objective. We sought to determine the feasibility of using vector length (VL), derived from bioimpedance analysis (BIA), in the assessment of postresuscitation volume status in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with sepsis. Method. This was a prospective observational single-center study. Our prim...

Assessing body composition with DXA and bioimpedance: effects of obesity, physical activity, and age.

OBJECTIVE This study evaluated to what extent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and two types of bioimpedance analysis (BIA) yield similar results for body fat mass (FM) in men and women with different levels of obesity and physical activity (PA). METHODS AND PROCEDURES The study population consisted of 37-81-year-old Finnish people (82 men and 86 women). FM% was estimated using DXA (GE ...

Bioimpedance analysis: a useful technique for assessing appendicular lean soft tissue mass and distribution.

The present study was aimed at evaluating the feasibility and reliability of lower limb skeletal muscle (SM) mass estimates obtained by bioimpedance analysis (BIA). BIA estimates were compared with the estimates obtained by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Ten normal weight and 10 obese women had BIA and DXA evaluations. Lower limb SM mass was then derived from DXA appendicular lean soft...

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis A Healthcare Technology of the Future

Bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) is an inexpensive, quick and non-invasive technique for measuring body composition. Unlike other various complicated methods, bioimpedance measurement technique is simple and less time consuming for various applications including medicine, biotechnology and security system. BIA is a promising method for predicting changes in body composition and has the p...
